The Troy Bruins, northern Miami Valley's affordable family entertainment destination, just became even more affordable with the announcement of new ticket discounts for students, youth hockey players, seniors and military members! The discounted ticket promotions will begin with this Saturday's home game against the Philadelphia Thunder at 8pm, and will run all season long.

While the regular general admission price of $7 is THE LOWEST full price sports ticket in the Miami Valley, the Bruins want to continue their dedication to maintaining an affordable entertainment option for as many people and families as possible, which led to the creation of special $1 discounts on the already low general admission price to any Miami Valley student (k-12 and college) with valid student ID or activity card, any youth hockey player wearing their team jersey, seniors 65+ and active or retired military members with valid ID.

Special $6 general admission tickets can be purchased at the Hobart Arena box office on gameday, with proper ID. Discounted tickets cannot be combined with any other offer, and does not include the Family 4-Pack for $25.

The Troy Bruins got back to their winning ways with a thrilling victory against in-state rival Findlay 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at Hobart Arena.

The Bruins controlled the first period right from the opening faceoff and, as a result of the increased hustle towards the net, Troy's Derek McPhearson got on the board first just 4:36 into the game to make it 1-0.

Momentum continued for the Bruins, and as a result, Troy captain Lee McClure lit the lamp off a crisp pass from Kyle Pierson to take a 2-0 lead at the midway point of the period.

Findlay would answer with a bouncing puck goal past the shoulders of Bruins netminder Colin Fisher to cut the lead back to one at the 12:41 mark, but Troy regained it's ground just eight seconds later as Bruins forward Josh Tucker was fed on the breakaway from McClure and Trent Iffland to extend the lead once more at 3-1.

While allowing a few Findlay chances on the penalty kill, Troy maintained its dominance, and extended the lead one final time in the period as Tucker took another pass from McClure and Cory Evalyn for his second goal of the game at the 16:58 mark. After twenty minutes, Troy outshot Findlay 11-7, and led 4-1.

The Bruins skated out in the second period with increased tempo, but would find their lead cut back to two early from the Grrrowl's lone goal of the period at the 11:02 mark by Brock Donnelly.

Troy took over control once again, with Tucker completing his third hat trick of the season with a breakaway goal at 13:40, then extended the lead to 6-2 with yet another Tucker goal - his fourth of the game - off a pass from McClure and Iffland with just :48 remaining in the period. It was the second time this season Tucker has scored four goals in one game. After forty minutes, the Bruins continued to outshoot the Grrrowl 25-17, and held the four-goal lead into the second intermission.

While controlling much of the flow in the third period, Troy was unable to find the back of the net, while the Findlay Grrrowl scored twice - the first at the 11:02 mark and again with just :50 left in regulation.

Final shots favored the Bruins 36-26 as Troy completed the weekend series against Findlay split 1-1.

Troy's overall record now stands at 4-2-0, and they prepare to host the Philadelphia Thunder next Saturday and Sunday at Hobart Arena.

The first two weeks of the season have sailed by for the Troy Bruins, who opened their inaugural 2009-2010 season with a 3-1-0 record after four road games in the first two weeks of the season; but Saturday night will mark the return of the Troy Bruins to the Miami Valley with a home opening weekend at historic Hobart Arena in downtown Troy, Ohio as they host in-state rival Findlay Grrrowl at 8pm.

This weekend features a series of "firsts": Saturday night will mark the first time either team has met, as well as the first time the Bruins have played in front of a home crowd at Hobart since 1959. Additionally, this weekend begins the TV broadcast coverage on Troy5, which now boasts coverage in over 30,000 homes in Miami County and surrounding areas with veteran professional broadcaster JT Szabo handling the play-by-play, simulcast with the live webcast on MiamiCountyPost.com.

Coming into this weekend, the Bruins remain deadlocked in a 3-way tie for first place in the NJHL, holding a 3-1-0 record for 6 points (Wooster & Jamestown also have 6 points). After winning their first three games of the season in Philadelphia and Wooster, the Bruins got their first taste of defeat on last Sunday, falling to the Oilers 5-2 and splitting the weekend series 1-1.

The Findlay Grrrowl, 2008-2009 UJHL champions, skate into Hobart Arena for the first time in organization history on Saturday, with head coach David Erickson leading his club against a few familiar faces. Current Bruins #2 Sean Hagerty, #8 Josh Tucker and #1 Chad Karns each played under Erickson for the Grrrowl last season.

The Grrrowl opened their 2009-2010 NJHL season with a series split in Jamestown, NY before falling on the road in Indiana, PA to the Indiana Inferno in week 2, and enter this weekend with a 1-2-0 record and hungry to regain .500 this early in the schedule.

Tickets for Opening night will be on sale at the Hobart Arena box office starting at Noon.

Both teams will rematch on Sunday afternoon at 1:30pm at Hobart.

Bruins open at Hobart Saturday
New team looks to add to storied name

Associate Sports Editor - Troy Daily News

Tight games, physical games, dramatic come-from-behind victories - four games into their history and the Troy Bruins are already doing a bit of everything.

Well, except playing a home game.

But that's something the Bruins will remedy Saturday night.

After a four-game road trip to open the Northern Junior Hockey League season, Troy plays its first-ever home game at Hobart Arena Saturday at 8 p.m., hosting the Findlay Grrrowl and looking to add more history to the storied Troy Bruins name.

"We created this team based on the old Troy Bruins, and we've got the old throwback jerseys and everything. It should be something special for the fans as well as the players," Troy Bruins coach Shane Hicke said.

The players already got a taste of that history earlier this week.

"We've got a weekly TV show on Mondays, and a couple of the old Troy Bruins players came out and our players got to meet them," Hicke said. "They'll also be at the game Saturday to watch us. It was really special for the players. They're starting to see that the Troy Bruins aren't just a new new hockey team - the name already has quite a bit of heritage."

Thus far, these Bruins seem to be living up to that heritage.

Troy went 3-1 on its road trip, sweeping a season-opening weekend series at Philadelphia and claiming a dramatic - and fiery - 7-6 comeback victory at Wooster Saturday, which at the time made the Bruins the only undefeated team in the NJHL.

The Bruins then suffered their first loss Sunday in Wooster to complete the series, falling 5-2.

"This team has a lot of heart, especially going out there shorthanded to start the season," Hicke said. "A lot of these other teams already had their 25-man roster complete, and for us being a new team and starting off later, we didn't get a head start on our recruiting like some of these other teams.

"The kids we have are very skilled players. For us winning our first three games on the road, I'm very proud of them. (Saturday against Wooster) the kids played really strong and with a lot of character, and when push came to shove, they pulled off the win. But losing that first game was tough. Once we play them again, we'll have something to prove."

Despite the smaller roster, Hicke said that the Bruins' training regimen has helped them be successful early.

"We've got to be in the best shape, especially with the numbers we have," Hicke said. "Our training has helped a lot. We went to Philadelphia not knowing what to expect, and the first two periods were close - but we pulled away in the third. Our conditioning played a big role in those first three wins."

And now the Bruins kick off the party at Hobart Arena Saturday against the Findlay Grrrowl.

"I don't know what to look for in the Findlay club, but they were a member of the UJHL and won that league, so they should be a strong team," Hicke said. "It should be a great game, and the fans should be able to see a fast-paced, up-and-down hockey game."

From Monday's Troy Daily News

The Troy Bruins lost their first game of the season Sunday afternoon at Wooster, falling 5-2.

Left shorthanded by injuries, the Bruins simply couldn't come up with energy late in the game. Alex Kuzmenko got the start in goal, but was replaced by Colin Fisher.

Trent Iffland scored a power play goal with 5:32 remaining in the second period, assisted by Aaron Huber and Kyle Pierson to get the Bruins on the board. Justin Dornhecker scored for the Bruins on an even-strength goal in the third period assisted by Sean Hagerty and Josh Tucker.

This time, though, there would be no late comeback for the Bruins. Saturday the Bruins trailed 6-3 in the third period before posting a 7-6 victory. Troy is now 3-1-0 and will play in its home opener Saturday at 8 p.m. against the Findlay Grrrowl in an NJHL contest at Hobart Arena.

The Troy Bruins improved to a perfect 3-0-0 in NJHL action with a thrilling come from behind victory over in-state rival Wooster Oilers on Saturday night.

After a scoreless first period, offense flourished in the middle frame, with Bruins veteran forward #8 Josh Tucker once again leading the charge, scoring the first two Troy goals. Tucker would add a pair in the third, securing his second hat trick this season.

In the third, physicality escalated, and the Bruins found themselves in the penalty box on several occasions; and as a result, Wooster would pull away with a 6-3 lead at the midway mark of the third period. Yet, despite the deficit, the Bruins battled back and tied the score thanks to the two Tucker goals and a tying score from #2 Sean Hagerty, before captain Lee McClure lit the red lamp for what would eventually become the game-winner.

With a perfect 3-0-0 record, the Bruins are now in sole possession of first place, and are the only remaining undefeated team in the NJHL. Wooster, who celebrated their home opener Saturday night, and who was unbeaten coming into the weekend, now drops their record to 2-1-0.

Both teams rematch in Wooster on Sunday afternoon, with faceoff set for 4:30pm at Alice Noble Arena. Fans can watch the game live online by clicking on the "Watch Live Games" button, or visiting
