Bruins Fall to Oilers in Late Surge, 6-5 TROY, OH- Tonight the Troy Bruins hosted the Wooster Oilers for the first time in Troy's historic Hobart Arena and engaged in a battle for first place. After tonight the Troy Bruins fall to a record 8-5-0, while the Wooster Oilers improve to 11-1-0. Play between the two teams was a steady and even matchup until the midpoint of the second period where the scoring and intensity of both teams would pick up. The first period started off slow with both teams battling for control of the puck, with Wooster taking an early lead to score first at the 9:14 mark. Tension was high from the two teams last meeting, and fighting broke out with other minor penalties occuring on both sides. Troy would later answer at 15:49 with a goal by #9 Justin Locante, assisted by #8 Josh Tucker. The hardfought first period would end with the score tied at 1. As the second period got underway, so did Troy's goal scoring. The Bruins would add two more goals to take the lead at 9:29 by Tucker with assists by #27 Justin Dornhecker and Locante, and at 12:13 by Locante with assists from Tucker and #14 Erik Levin. As the second period came to a close, Troy seemed to have the upper hand and the momentum they needed going into the third period. The third period would again see both teams battling for the control of the game and the league with many scoring opportunities. Wooster would retake the lead of the game by lighting the net with five unanswered goals and take the lead over the Bruins 6-3. After a timeout, the Bruins emerged with all cylinders firing to score two goals late into the third period at 19:03 by #22 Derek McPherson with assists from #15 Lee McClure and Levin; and at 19:30 by #19 Aaron Huber with assists from McPherson and McClure. Troy would be unable to tie up the game and would loose to Wooster by a final score of 6-5. Total shots on goal ended with Troy taking 24 and Wooster taking 43. Week 8 of the NJHL regular season rolls into Troy on Saturday, October 31, at 8:00pm and Sunday, November 1 at 1:30pm and brings with it for the first time in Troy Bruins history in-state rival and league leading Wooster Oilers for a weekend home series at the historic Hobart Arena in downtown Troy. The past six weeks of the season have been kind to the Ohio-based clubs, with Wooster holding onto first place heading into the weekend, just four points ahead of second place Troy. Wooster, the second closest geographic rival to the Bruins (only behind Findlay), the Oilers come into Hobart as a deep, physical and experienced team looking to advance their dominance of the early NJHL standings. The Bruins enter this weekend's series with a more evolved nucleus of key players, and a deeper bench from the team's first meeting back in week 2 at the Alice Noble Arena in Wooster. Last Time Out: Both teams have met twice before, back on September 19 and 20 in Wooster, with the Bruins coming from behind in the third period to tie, and ultimately defeat the Oilers in the final seconds 7-6, spoiling their home opener. Short of a full roster due to injuries, and fatigued from the tremendous effort the night before, Troy would fall to the Oilers during Sunday's rematch 5-2 to split the weekend series. Wooster Since: Since splitting the series against the Bruins in week 2, Wooster has been able to utilize it's depth and offense in dominating several weekend series against other NJHL clubs, most notably two separate weekend sweeps of the Philadelphia Thunder at home, as well as a recent romp of the Jamestown Jets on the road. The Oilers have gone undefeated in the weeks since falling to Troy at home on September, 19, giving them an unprecedented 7-0 record heading into battle with the Bruins, with three of those wins coming on the road. The Oilers will have their work cut out for them this weekend, playing three games in three nights, beginning with a Friday home game versus the Jamestown Jets, before traveling to Troy for a Saturday and Sunday match up with the Bruins. Troy Since: While not going undefeated, the Troy Bruins have climbed up the NJHL standings since they last met the Oilers, taking their lumps as a first year team with loses to Findlay on opening night, and being swept by a powerful Team Ulysse on Hobart ice, yet bouncing back with offensively charged wins against Findlay, Philadelphia and Adirondack. With eight of the last twelve games inside the confines of Troy's Hobart Arena, the Bruins have become extremely comfortable at home, and with the unique rink dimensions in the neutral zone. Coming off the physical weekend sweep of the Adirondack Predators last weekend, the Bruins prepare to host the Oilers for the first time in team history, with a possible share of first place up for grabs with a solid two-game performance. Players To Watch - Wooster: #9 Brandon McPhail - 10GP 17G 19A 36PTS McPhail, the Oilers captain, leads the offensive charge for Wooster by utilizing his size and strength, as well as his surprising speed to convert odd man rushes towards the attacking zone. Watch for multiple chances to go end to end. #8 Kevin Tejchma - 11GP 12G 19A 31PTS A former Findlay Grrrowl and teammate of Bruins Josh Tucker, Chad Karns and Sean Hagerty, Tejchma's style isn't pretty but it is effective in front of the net. Keep an eye for this scrappy forward to plant himself in front of the net. #16 Max Rickard - 8GP 2G 8A 10PTS Coming off a league suspension for a dangerous slash to Bruins captain Lee McClure's head in the Oiler's home opening loss to Troy, Rickard is now trying to catch up in the stats category. Watch for Rickard to be an unpopular opponent with the Bruins and McClure. Players To Watch - Troy: #8 Josh Tucker - 12GP 22G 9A 31PTS Bruins leading scorer Josh Tucker continues his dominance of the NJHL, most recently being the first Bruins in team history to surpass 30 points. The Central Ohio native also boasts 4 short handed goals, 2 power play goals and now with custom white skates. Look for tucker to set up offensively and execute 180 feet down the ice. #15 Lee McClure - 11GP 10G 17A 27PTS A true double-threat, McClure's skills and experience from the higher levels of hockey, combined with his pro-caliber shot allow the Beavercreek, Ohio native to be a threat anywhere on the ice, both offensively and defensively. Watch for special team excellence. #14 Erik Levin - 12GP 3G 2A 5PTS Levin, a native of The Republic of Kazakhstan, supplies the Bruins with solid defensive talent both at the blueline and in front of the net. Arguably the most consistent Bruin, watch for Levin to just do his job...really well. On The Air: This weekend's home series will be broadcast Live on the Troy Bruins Hockey Network, with the live Internet Telecast with streaming video found at www.MiamiCountyPost.com, Internet Radio broadcast through NET96 at www.flashback96.net and Televised on taped-delay by Troy Public Broadcasting Channel 5. Veteran professional hockey broadcaster JT Szabo will handle the simulcast call. Tickets Just $7: All general admission tickets for both games are just $7, and are available day of game at the Hobart Arena box office. Fans can purchase four tickets through the "Family 4-Pack" for only $25, with groups of 10+ receiving a special group rate of $6. Bruins TV Commercial Begins Airing Wednesday 10/27/2009
In preparation for this weekend's "Ohio Battle For First Place", The Bruins have released details on their latest TV campaign to be broadcast on Dayton's CW, the #1 CW affiliate in the nation for the third consecutive year. The :15 spot, voiced by Bruins TV broadcaster JT Szabo, will run Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoon and evening during such popular programing as My Name Is Earl, King of Queens and Everybody Loves Raymond. The spot, along with last week's, was produced by Daytons CW for the Bruins. Troy, Ohio - Week 7 of the 2009-2010 NJHL regular season proved to be action packed inside Troy's historic Hobart Arena, with the Troy Bruins grinding it out with the Adirondack Predators to sweep the two-game weekend series, and take sole possession of second place in the NJHL. Coming into the weekend, neither team had previously met in either club's history, with Adirondack traveling to Troy for the first time. The Predators would waste little time taking the first lead of the night on Saturday, before the Bruins offense machine fired four unanswered goals to end the first period. Both teams would trade goals in the second, featuring a season's first "hat trick" for Bruins captain #15 Lee McClure before Troy put away the Predators in the third period for the 10-4 final score. Sunday afternoon's matinee rematch would feature an Adirondack team shortened by injuries, yet even more determined. After an even-tempo start, the Bruins were able to take an early lead just 4:39 in, with #6 Garrett Wall notching the go-ahead goal off a #15 Lee McClure pass. Determination proved beneficial for the Predators early in the contest, as they answered with the tying goal 1:22 later. The period would become an entertaining and surprisingly even match up that once again featured an offensive explosion for both clubs as the Predators took their first and only lead of the game at the 12:21 mark, before Troy's #27 Justin Dornhecker tied the tally once more only :13 later. Led by captain #15 Lee McClure's third powerplay goal of the weekend, the Bruins opened Sunday's second period with an early goal less than two minutes in, helping to extend the lead to two. The Bruins would score three unanswered goals in the period, one each from #19 Aaron Huber, #8 Josh Tucker and #9 Justin Laconte, before the Predators bounced in a rebound goal at 16:55, then scored again with :45 to go in the period to cut the lead back to two. Neither team would be able to muster a goal until the midway point of the third period, when at the 9:22 mark, Bruins leading scorer #8 Josh Tucker rifled in a shorthanded goal, with McClure and #22 Derek McPherson assisting. Just like clockwork, the Predators managed their final goal of the game at the 10:00 mark of the third before the Bruins added their eighth and final point of the afternoon at 18:00, with Laconte sniping a centering pass from Tucker for the 8-4 final score. With the win, the Bruins improve their overall regular season record to 8-4-0, and leapfrog the Predators for sole possession of second place. Looking ahead to next weekend, the Bruins host in-state rival Wooster Oilers on Saturday night at 8pm and Sunday afternoon at 1:30pm. The Oilers, who swept the Jamestown Jets in week 7, come into Hobart Arena for the first time, and boast sole possession of first place in the NJHL, just 4 points ahead of the Bruins. The Bruins can take a share of first place with a pair of wins over Wooster this weekend. Tickets for this weekend's series are still available by calling the Bruins at 985-PUCK or visiting www.TroyBruins.com with ALL Seats just $7 with FREE Parking. Saturday night will feature a Bruins Halloween Bash with kids 12 and under wearing a costume to the game receiving FREE admission with a paid adult and a costume contest on the ice during the first intermission. Bruins Sweep Predators With 8-4 Sunday Win 10/25/2009
TROY, OH- The Troy Bruins finished off the weekend with an 8-4 win in yet another physical game, to sweep the Adirondack Predators on Sunday afternoon at Troy's Historic Hobart Arena. With the win, the Bruins extend their record to 8-4-0, and now occupy sole possession of second place in the NJHL. Full details of the game will be available on Monday with the Bruins weekly release. The Troy Bruins participated in the 2009 edition of the Troy Halloween Event, sponsored by Troy Main Street, held on Prouty Plaza in downtown Troy on Saturday morning. Bruins players, and of course Bucky, were on hand to help pass out candy for the hundreds of costumed kids trick-or-treating throughout the downtown square, as well as participating in the annual costume contest at center stage. A special bonus was awarded to the Bruins by the Troy Optimist Club as they were presented a trophy for their participation in the event by Optimist leader Leib Lurie. Bruins Overpower Adirondack With 10-4 Win 10/24/2009
Troy, OH - The Troy Bruins got back to their winning ways with a hard-fought display of offense against the Adirondack Predators in the first meeting between the two clubs, with the Bruins pulling out a 10-4 decision on home ice inside the Historic Hobart Arena in Troy on Saturday night. With the addition of new Bruins to the roster, Troy started their first game in two weeks feeling out the Predators, who boasted a large compliment of European players, before settling into an aggressive and physical style of play. Play would remain scoreless until 8:13 into the first period, as the Predators bounced a pass behind Bruins starting netminder Alexander Kuzmenko to take an early 1-0 lead. Yet, just :23 later, Bruins starting centerman #19 Aaron Huber found the back of the net for the tying answer. Huber's goal, his sixth of the season, sparked the Bruins offense in the first, with Troy scoring three more goals in the period and forcing the Predators to pull their starting netminder Anthony McDaniels with a little under 5:00 to go. Of the Troy goals in the first, two were from the stick of team captain #15 Lee McClure, and one was a backhand sniper from #9 Justin Laconte. After twenty minutes, the Bruins took a 4-1 lead into the dressing room, and led the Predators in shots 17-7. Chomping at the bit between periods, the Bruins offense machine started the second period just as it had finished the first, with #15 Lee McClure scoring his "hat trick" earning third goal of the night just :47 into the middle stanza on the K's Hamburger Shop Powerplay. McClure, in his first game after being moved from Defense to Wing, scored his first "hat trick" of the season with the early goal. Adirondack would answer with a quick pair of goals at the midway point of the period, but would be powerless to stop the Bruins from doing the same at the tail end of the second, thanks to #19 Aaron Huber's second lamplighter of the contest at 14:56, and #22 Derek McPherson's first goal of the weekend less than a minute later. Troy's 7-3 lead propelled them into the second intermission with confidence, out shooting the Predators 12-10 in the period. The first forty minutes would see Bruins leading scorer #8 Josh Tucker without a single point, before he found the back of the net for an even-strength goal from Laconte and #23 Tyler Merritt at the 5:13 mark of the third. Tempers flared in the early half of the third period, with both McClure and Iffland involved in fisticuffs, and after the delay, Troy's #27 Justin Dornhecker capitalized on a setup from Merritt and Tucker to extend the lead 9-3 at the 13:10 mark. Adirondack's Lenoid Kovalev notched the Predators final goal of the game at the 16:40 mark, and not to be outdone, Bruins defenseman #23 Tyler Merritt mustered his first goal of the season from defensive partner #14 Erik Levin to ensure the game's 10-4 final score. Shots in the third favored the Bruins 10-6. With the win, Troy improves it's overall regular season record to 7-4-0, while Adirondack drops to 7-3-1 and remain just one point ahead of the Bruins for second place in the NJHL. Both teams lace them up for a matinee rematch Sunday at 1:30pm at Troy's historic Hobart Arena. All general admission tickets are just $7, and can be purchased at the Hobart box office prior to game time. For more information on the Bruins, visit www.TroyBruins.com.
