But Szabo is already accustomed to coaching on the Hobart Arena ice - the former professional goaltender helped found the Troy High School hockey program in 1996 and coached the team for 11 seasons.

"I had it for a long time, but I've been out of it for a couple of years," Szabo said. "I'm looking forward to working with the kids. I feel very comfortable with it."

Last season, the camp produced a couple of breakout stars, including Josh Tucker and Trent Iffland. Tucker ended the season second on the team in goals (36) and third in points (64), while Iffland helped anchor the team's defensive corps.

And while no one player had the impact showing that Tucker and Iffland did last year, Szabo was still impressed by what he saw.

"It's been more of an even deal this year. We haven't had that kind of standout, but everyone has looked good," Szabo said. "Zach Johnson has looked pretty good, and defenseman Buddy Naber has looked really good. He's still got some camps to go to, so we're hoping he's available."

During last season's preseason camp, everything was new as the team had no one on the roster. This year, however, a number of returning players came back to lend a different dynamic to the camp, including leading score Lee McClure and fellow forward Justin Dornhecker, defender Sean Hagerty, goalie Allen Dowler and Sidney's Sam Klepinger, who was a late addition to the team last year.

"I've been really impressed by the returning players," Szabo said. "Particularly Sam Klepinger. He's showing a big difference in his speed.

"You always want to bring a good nucleus back, but part of our goal is to move these kids on to higher levels. We've got a few players from last year at some higher-level camps and they may still be back, but we're trying to move everyone on as best as we can."

This weekend's camp also marked a chance for local talent to get a look at being part of a "Junior A" minor league hockey team.

"This is one of the reasons we started the team, getting local kids an opportunity to be exposed to this level," Szabo said. "We had a number of kids from the high school team try out, and they've been holding their own. They'll be trying out for the high school team again, too."

One thing it for sure - everyone is ready to get back on the ice.

"The kids are all eager to get back, everyone is," Szabo said. "Even the ones that couldn't be here, I've gotten phone calls from. We'll probably be a little younger this year, but hopefully each year we'll get a little better."

The Bruins begin the 2010-11 season on the road and open up play at Hobart Arena Sept. 17.

Bucky Visits West Main Street BlockParty In Troy Saturday

http://www.troybruins.com/1/post/2010/07/bucky-visits-west-main-street-blockparty-in-troy-saturday.html

http://www.troybruins.com/1/post/2010/07/bucky-visits-west-main-street-blockparty-in-troy-saturday.html#comments

Uncategorized

[...]

<div style="height: 20px; Last year's event raised over $17,000 for the Troy-Miami County Public Library, while this year will support the St. Patrick's church hunger initiatives. The Bruins are proud to have hosted a canned food drive last November, with the organization donating several full boxes of meals to the hungry in Troy.

Once he made his rounds on the sizzling pavement, it was time to return to the chilled Hobart Arena to watch the remainder of Saturday's open local tryout camp for the upcoming season.

If you didn't get to see Bucky Saturday, he will be back out in the community in the coming weeks as he prepares for Opening Weekend 2010 set for Friday and Saturday, September 17-18 at Hobart Arena, when the Bruins will kickoff hockey season in the Miami Valley with a weekend series against the Battle Creek Revolution. Season Tickets are now on sale for the entire 2010-2011 season, and are just $125!
