Former professional hockey netminder Rick Szabo leads the efforts to bring competitive hockey back to Troy.

A native of Grimsby, Ontario, Szabo has seen action in a number of leagues during his decade-long career between the pipes, from the OHL to the original IHL, AHL, WHA and more before settling down in Troy with the now-defunct Troy Sabres (1982-1988 CoHL, AAHL).

Szabo has been active in the community and the local hockey scene since, volunteering his time to coach numerous youth programs, and was instrumental to the founding of the Troy High School varsity hockey program in 1996 before retiring from coaching after 11 seasons behind the THS bench.

Szabo continues his involvement and dedication to the sport of hockey in the Miami Valley as Founder of the Troy Bruins.

Professional hockey broadcaster and entrepreneur JT Szabo joins the staff of the Troy Bruins as VP of Communication & Broadcasting, responsible for all aspects of Bruins public relations, marketing, promotion and broadcast efforts.

Having nearly a decade of experience in the media and sports industries, Szabo comes to the Bruins front office having most recently served as radio and television play-by-play voice of the ECHL’s Dayton Bombers.

Additionally, Szabo has had broadcast stints with The Ohio State Buckeyes soccer and hockey teams as well as the USHL’s Ohio Junior Blue Jackets alongside NHL veteran Mike Miller.


A native of Troy, Ohio, and dual Canadian citizen, Szabo credits his start in broadcasting to Steve Dunne and local television station Troy5, of which he worked with for nearly six years, as well as listening to NHL veteran John Wiedeman and his father Rick call Cincinnati Cyclones IHL contests as a child.

In addition to his hockey positions, Szabo is also founder and publisher of The Miami County Post at www.miamicountypost.com, a free online news and information resource focused on the communities of Miami County, Ohio.

Shane Hicke has a vast knowledge of hockey from the youth level to the pros. Shane is a college grad and three sport athlete from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire with a degree in Advertising and Marketing.

Shane spent last season in Canada coaching the Innisfil Lakers Jr. A Tier II hockey team. The Lakers had the best record in the regular season, sent 7 players to the All Star Game and in addition to Shane being selected to coach the all-star team, set many season records for the club.

Before coaching at the Junior Hockey level, Shane spent several seasons helping to start up and coaching AAA programs in the West Coast, while winning many State Championships and Tournaments across US and Canada. Shane also has coaching experience at the USA Hockey regional selects program and at the US National Selects festival. 

Shane is also the son of former NHLer Ernie Hicke. Ernie played his Jr. Hockey with the Regina Pats and then moved to the Montreal Canadians of the NHL where he was traded to the Oakland Seals for Guy Lafleur. Ernie also played for the Atlanta Flames, New York Islanders, Minnesota North Stars and the LA Kings during his career.

Ernie Hicke

Ernie Hicke was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. Ernie played junior hockey starting in 1963 for the Regina Pats, before being called up into the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens organization. He continued his NHL career with such clubs as the Oakland Seals, Atlanta Flames, New York Islanders, Minnesota North Stars and the Los Angeles Kings,. Ernie’s outstanding career had him playing in the NHL for 14 years completing his career as an Assistant Coach/Player for the Dallas Blackhawks in the CHL winning a Championship there.

Ernie continued his sports endeavors managing/building hockey schools, camps and programs for children as young as toddlers to adults, instructing them in basis skating skills to advanced hockey techniques. Ernie is a professional scout for many juniors  teams to minor league hockey programs, Ernie has been successful at helping numerous young hockey hopefuls make their way in to Junior’s, Colleges, Universities, and minor league teams and drafts.
